Vibrato and vowel identification
نویسنده
چکیده
The influence of vibrato on vowel identification i s studied in synthesized vowel sounds with fundamental frequencies between 300 and 1000 Hz. Phonetically trained subjects were asked to identify these stimuli presented with and without vibrato a s any of 12 Swedish long vowels. Small and occasional effects a r e observed on the mean formant frequencies and the scatter between the responses. However, the effects a r e greater and more frequent$haai would be expected by chance. In a majority of the cases, where the vibrato affected the responses, the vowel identification became somewhat harder when the stimulus was presented with vibrato.

The Effect of English Vowel-Recognition Training on Beginner and Advanced Iranian ESL Learners
This study was an attempt to investigate the effect of vowel-recognition training on beginner and advanced Iranian ESL learners. A total of 36 adult Iranian ESL learners (18 advanced and 18 beginners) who were students of various majors at Memorial University (MUN) were recruited for the study. Advanced participants had the experience of living in Canada for at least three years while beginners...
متن کاملAcoustic and psychoacoustic aspects of vocal vibrato
This article reviews research on vocal vibrato and related phenomena. As the vibrato corresponds to a modulation of the fundamental frequency, the primary acoustic attributes are the@equency and amplitude of this modulation as well as its waveform. The range of variation of these parameters in classical operatic singing are discussed as well as the boundaries to similar phenomena such as tremol...
متن کاملAcoustical factors related to pitch precision in choir singing
Choirs seem to exhibit varying proficiency of intonation (meaning the overall degree of precision in pitch) under differing acoustic conditions. If so, which conditions are the most conducive to correct intonation? Amateur male choir singers were asked to sing (one at a time) just intervals from a synthetic vowel tone whose spectrum arrd vibrato content were varied. The standard deviation in fu...
متن کاملIt Must Be Louis ’cause Miles Don’t Shake like That: towards Identifying Jazz Trumpeters by Vibrato
We at Rutgers have a special interest in jazz performer identification. Rutgers is the home of the Institute for Jazz Studies, which houses one of the largest collection of jazz sound recordings. Automated performer identification would be an important tool for the curators of the collection. Our focus, therefore, has been on the identification of jazz instrumentalists, specifically jazz trumpe...
متن کاملJust noticeable differences of open quotient and asymmetry coefficient in singing voice.
This study aims to explore the perceptual relevance of the variations of glottal flow parameters and to what extent a small variation can be detected. Just Noticeable Differences (JNDs) have been measured for three values of open quotient (0.4, 0.6, and 0.8) and two values of asymmetry coefficient (2/3 and 0.8), and the effect of changes of vowel, pitch, vibrato, and amplitude parameters has be...
